We are done with Macbeth! The rest of our year is closing up loose ends. On Tues we review the "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" soliloquy--it WILL be on the test. Wed is the MB quotes test. Reading Ladder is due on Monday, June 6. Exam is Wed, June 8. We made it!
We continue with our study of ambition and Macbeth this week! As we head into Acts II & III, you will want to keep a close eye on the concept of ambition and how it affects people (in our case, the characters in the play). We will continue to see how the witches, Lady Macbeth, and his own ambitions all influence Macbeth. Be sure to keep up with your study guide for the quotes test. The test is planned for Friday, May 27.
This week we do our comparative analysis of Lord of the Flies. We will view the film and close read several excerpts. You will be asked to develop interpretations based on close-reading of the text and then evaluate the film's representation of the text.
Remember: Your Raisin in the Sun essay is due on May 2nd. If you need help, please ask for it! We're in the home stretch!
This week we will transition from our reading of A Raisin in the Sun to a critical comparison of Lord of the Flies. We will return to the Langston Hughes poem "Harlem" to reflect on why Hansberry chose a line from it for her play's title. We will also prepare for writing an analytical essay about the play (due May 2). Wed is Advisory Day--we will discuss our final, year-end Reading Ladder. On Thurs we will watch a Simon Sinek TEDTalk about ambition and leadership (tied thematically to both the play and our next text). On Friday we will begin our critical comparison of Lord of the Flies film and novel. This week, as promised, you will have a couple of in-class workshop days for your writing project (Monday and Wed). We're headed toward a due date the week of March 28. Please be sure to ask for help if you need it!
We will also continue reading in A Raisin in the Sun. As we complete Act I we'll do a bit of exploration of characterization and dynamics. In-class written response on Friday. Writing workshop continues on the passion project. This will be our last dedicated week for the project so use your time wisely.
Independent Reading requirement this week: 2 hours This week we will continue the writing unit with a look at alternative modes of expressing a "thesis" or "claim." The spoken word poetry, storytelling, TEDtalk, and commercials we'll view will help to show us that thesis writing isn't necessarily always an essay with a thesis statement conveniently located in the intro paragraph.
Keep in mind that this is heading toward your own thesis-driven piece so be thinking about what you want to say and how you want to say it. RIR requirement this week: 2 hrs We're a couple weeks into Q3 and well into our writing unit.
This week we'll be finishing up our Teen Voice project and get you ready to write the final piece. Mon - Wed we'll continue with some more mentor text analysis and journal writings. Thurs we will discuss the Teen Voice final piece. This week's Independent Reading goal is 2 hrs+. Many of you have challenging goals for semester 2 so keep that pace up! Welcome back! Lots of good work to get done before we head into midterm exams.
For reading, we will maintain the 1 1/2 hour per week goal for Independent Reading for the next two weeks as we will also have consistent nightly reading in Local Girls. Be sure to maintain a good pace to reach or exceed your goal! For reading in Local Girls, refer to the posted reading schedule, with the assigned annotation work. |
