Advanced Placement Literature and Composition
AP Lit & Comp is a course designed for students with a genuine love of literature and language and who want to challenge themselves in their senior year English class. The readings are varied and the pace moves along swiftly. Students are expected to not simply read the assigned texts but actively read them, making notes, asking questions, noting passages for discussion, etc. Class is most often conducted in the manner of a college-style seminar; student-centered discussion will direct our exploration of texts. To that end, all students are expected to contribute to discussions on a consistent basis and to be accountable to one another as listeners, supporters, and questioners.
Writing is frequent and takes on many forms, including: formal essays; in-class essays; short personal responses; online responses; creative writing; and many others. Students should come with a willingness to draft, revise and take risks in their writing. A strong background in literary analysis writing is expected. The aim of the course is to develop students' ability to express themselves in myriad ways.
It is expected that students will be taking the AP Lit & Comp exam in May and the course provides frequent opportunities for students to practice and improve upon the skills necessary for success on this exam.
Students should seek individual conferences as necessary to customize their instruction and provide them with the tools they need to succeed in the course, on the AP exam and in college.
