We work through the beginning of Local Girls this week and a half. We will do a response to "Gretel" and "Fate," focusing on using an inquiry question to formulate a claim.

This week we finish up with Catcher and begin to move on to our next whole-class text, Alice Hoffman's Local Girls.
On Mon we'll spend a day working in motif groups to plan your Voicethread projects and we'll return to those groups again on Friday to check on progress. Those will be the only two in-class days to work on this project. One other day will be spent concluding our look at Catcher. We will begin Local Girls this week, completing ch's 1 - 2. Our work with this novel will concentrate on Shared Inquiry discussions so you will want to make sure you are caught up on reading at all times so you can participate. A quick week before the long weekend!
Mon: we'll read Ch 23 in class; Ch 24 is for homework Tues: discuss Ch 24 in class; Ch 25 is for homework Wed: pre-holiday fun! We have lots to do this week before your Spillane-less Thursday and Friday!
We are nearing the end of Catcher. Reading schedule this week is: ch 18 due Mon ch 19 - 20 due Tues ch's 21 - 22 due Wed Because this reading is a little heavier than usual, we'll scale back on the required time for indpendent reading this week. You will only be required to do 1 hr 15 min to meet your reading goal for the week (but of course, you're encouraged to do more!). On Mon we'll continue the writing that we were doing about the Sally Hayes chapter. On Wed we'll work with another of Salinger's signature metaphorical images (more drawing!). On Thurs and Fri you'll have some extended independent reading time and time to work with your motif groups. This is the last week of marking period 1!
This week we will take note of motifs in The Catcher in the Rye in order to begin keeping track of several of them and, ultimately, interpret how Salinger uses them to tell this story. This will be something that you are responsible for keeping up through the rest of the reading assignments! Reading schedule: Ch's 10-12 due on Wed Ch's 13 - 14 due Fri Don't forget to keep up with your Independent Reading! We're almost there with 100% of the class meeting goal. Welcome to Spirit Week!
This week we will work through Ch's 8 - 10 in The Catcher in the Rye, focusing on how Holden makes the transition from Pencey to NYC. Please keep up with your independent reading! We're going to add some books to our classroom library this week and hopefully that will inspire you! Revisions of the Teen Film essay will be offered as an option--if I conference with you with specifically, you SHOULD revise. Revisions are due on Wed. We continue with The Catcher in the Rye this week.
Ch's 1- 2: looking at exposition (the laying out of characters, conflicts, setting, etc) Ch's 2 & 3-4: analyzing Holden's character through his interaction with adults (ch 2) and peers (ch 3's & 4) Ch 5: we learn some of Holden's backstory--does it change how we see him? Ch 6 & 7: we start to sense some of Holden's conflicts--seeds of the rest of the story Reading schedule: Ch's 3 - 4 due Wed. Ch 5 due Fri Ch's 6 - 7 due Mon A bit of a broken up week as we have Monday off and then PSATs on Wed. Plenty for us to do, though!
Tues--we will take one final look at your Teen Film analysis drafts. Be sure to check back at your Billy Madison responses and the feedback you received so you can revise and edit for those focus areas. Wed--PSATs: we will see each other for a short while. Let's use the time for Independent Reading! Thurs--Teen Film Analysis due; begin The Catcher in the Rye; hwk will be to read ch's 1 - 2 Fri--discussion on Catcher ch 2 Don't forget to keep up with your 2 hours per week of Independent Reading! This week our work with the teen film clips combines with our work on the Billy Madison responses to result in a revised written response.
We will spend the week in critical viewing of the clips (active, purposeful viewing with directed notetaking) and then work on composing and revising a claim-driven response. The areas for assessment on the claim are the same as for the written responses we did with the Billy Madison unit. This is your opportunity to learn from that feedback and apply it to a writing piece. |
